People hate pop-up ads on websites.
They also hate videos that auto-play but that’s a topic for another post.
Here’s a recent Tweet I just stumbled upon:
Lee Odden, whom I don’t know, is right. Think about it. If people liked pop-up ads, there wouldn’t be a thriving industry making and selling pop-up blockers.
We know some ads are important and mission-critical:
- Getting people to sign up for a mailing list is OK
- Enticing folks to subscribe to a site is OK
- Seeking contributions and/or subscriptions is OK
But less is more.
If a visitor to a website has to bat away pop-up ads like she’s fighting off mosquitoes, you’re doing it wrong.
